Thought

Often, we have heard people say "Don't limit yourself with small thoughts, think bigger". We are encouraged to always believe in the impossible, and aim for the sky. These thoughts no doubt seem to liberate us, as it makes us realise that we are not limited to what we think we are, but we are much more than what we think. In this sense, it liberates us.

However, no matter how big that thought may be, the fact is it doesn't liberate us really. True liberation is having no boundaries. Having complete freedom. But these 'big' thoughts only increases the space within which we are confined. It is like, a prisoner who moves from a small cell to a larger one, and then into a hall. The only change here is the area of his confinement. Some day, he may be locked inside a room that say, covers the entire city of Chennai. In all cases, the fact is he is still surrounded by walls on all sides, and therefore, there ends his freedom of movement. A 'big' thought is similar to the wall. It only stretches the boundaries of the mind.

So when can we truly be liberated? A prisoner is truly free only when the walls disappear. Even saying the wall being at an infinite distance is not liberation, because it is the wall that makes him bound, and the distance doesn't matter. Similarly, it is when thought itself ceases to exist, a person is truly liberated. It is in total blankness of the mind that man sees freedom.

hmmm... nice thoughts. when one talks of liberation in the physical sense, as i see it, it seems to be impossible. Even if u are free to move around, the earth prolly, u r still restricted to travel out of the earth. Even if u can travel out of the earth, can u keep travelling???

On liberation of thoughts, do u really have any boundaries? If one assumes boundaries, i guess, it is the way are taught to think. Making assumptions, and setting conditions of each process is what we do in solving(thinking) about anything we are upto. am i right in telling this?

I guess you are right. What you said restricts us in a big way. But I hope to convey something else too....there are many things about which our understanding is in the form of just concepts. There are no hard physical evidences. Say things like God, mind. I am talking about subjects like philosophy, psychology etc. Our understanding about all these are a bunch of thoughts, which we call concepts. What if what you have built in the form of concepts is not true? There is no way you can confirm whether what you say is true or false by merely thinking more about it. You only keep going round and round, without reaching any end. So there has to be some way out of this. I think the we have to realise that thought is not the tool with which we can nail this issue, but go beyond thought itself.
